Hendri Rachman, founder of Ace Property Team, challenging invisible ceilings, redefining success and learning to trust himself through uncertainty, discomfort and growth.
The post-podcast Q&A following Episode 8 of Ticking Junction, “The Invisible Ceiling Holding You Back.”
Jen: After reflecting on our conversation, what does a “Ticking Junction” mean to you now?
Hendri: It seems to be a moment where your back is pushed into a corner, and you need to make a decision at a crossroads as to what you wish to do (which will determine the path and destination for the rest of your life).
Jen: We spoke about the invisible ceilings we inherit from our environment. Looking back, which ceiling had the biggest influence on the direction your life took?
Hendri: The problem with ceilings is that you don't even know they're ceilings in the first place, and so, if you have an open mind, you continuously explore it. You continuously reach that certain ceiling, and then you make a conscious decision to choose to become more, be more, do more (which ultimately gets you to a new level, at which eventually you'll hit a new ceiling).
Jen: You described several moments where your idea of what was possible expanded. Which moment do you think changed your internal sense of what you were capable of most?
Hendri: If you're asking about the biggest shift, it would be, I guess, at the junction point or the Ticking Junction that we're speaking of. But even after you make the decision, it's continuous learning and exploration, so I believe all those experiences accumulate to get us to where we are now.
Jen: We talked about entering rooms before you necessarily feel like you belong in them. How has your relationship with discomfort changed as you’ve grown?
Hendri: Over time, I've learned that you have to get comfortable with the uncomfortable. That feeling is just there because you're not familiar with it, and so the more exposure you have to it, the more you'll become accustomed to it, eventually having it feel normal. Then your sense of self, over time, will adjust and shift to it if you wanted it to.
Jen: Your definition of success has moved from money and milestones towards time, family and presence. Was there a particular junction where that shift started to happen?
Hendri: I think those changes happen as you progress through your financial levels because you work through from having nothing. Let's say you're going from survival mode, trying to get by, to being a little bit comfortable. Now you want to achieve things you've never had, felt, or experienced before, and if you've done that, then what else?
After you cover off the basics and some, now family time, relationships, and experiences are way more important because I've noticed that those are the memories I actually remember.
Jen: Nearly losing what you had built forced you to rethink growth. Looking back now, what did that period teach you that success alone couldn’t have taught you?
Hendri: So now it's about understanding it and making a conscious decision to improve it and take ownership, because no one is coming to save you but only yourself. I've also noticed that there's always a silver lining, and there are positives that come out of it, although they may not seem so obvious at the time. If you analyse it, it's there
Jen: Self-trust became a recurring theme in our conversation. When you reach your next major junction and don’t know what comes next, what do you now trust yourself to do differently?
Hendri: Uncertainty is part of life. It will always be there, and so I don't try to control that. Whatever may come, I have built that self-confidence and reliance to know that, no matter what, I will eventually find the answer (no matter how hard the current period is), that there's always a silver lining, and that I'll work it out.
Jen: If someone is currently standing at their own Ticking Junction, caught between the life they know and a life that feels bigger than what they believe they belong in, what would you want them to remember?
Hendri: If you're feeling this way, it means that you want the next phase of your life, whatever that may look like to you. That's why you feel this way, and so you need to lean into the discomfort. You need to start, or continuously build on your self-trust, and take the leap of faith and make that decision, because if it wasn't for you, you wouldn't be feeling it in the first place.
